The Carlisle 2s began their season with a closely contested 2–1 defeat against Morpeth 4s in their opening fixture.
With the first game of the season comes the usual challenge of finding rhythm and match sharpness, but Carlisle started positively and competed well throughout the opening half. Both sides had periods of possession and created opportunities, although neither was able to find the breakthrough before half time, with the scores level at 0–0.
Morpeth broke the deadlock after the interval to take the lead from a penalty corner.
Carlisle responded well and continued to press, eventually finding an equaliser to bring the game level after a pass from Rob Hitch found Bless to score.
Morpeth then regained their advantage with a second goal to turn the game around.
Carlisle continued to battle right until the final whistle and created opportunities to get back on level terms, but Morpeth's defence held firm to secure the 2–1 victory.
Despite the result, there were plenty of positives for Carlisle to take from their first outing of the season. Carlisle fielded a number of young players, who all showcased their skills in front of the throng of spectators. Max Blackburn was deservedly named Man of the Match following an impressive performance, while both Max and James made their debuts for the 2s.
The only blot on the afternoon came with Lee receiving a yellow card, earning himself the inaugural DOTD award of the season.
A competitive first game gives the 2s plenty to build on as they look ahead to the rest of the campaign.
