A combined Carlisle and Wigton team visited the might of Fylde Hockey Club, a much more vaunted and experienced outfit.
From the start of the game, the Fylde team, adorned in white, surged forward and launched a blizzard of attacks against the Cumbrian rear-guard.
Undaunted, the defence of Connie & Phoebe Jackson and Willow Armstrong repelled the attempted invasion. This allowed the central midfield triumvirate of Thalia Kasiera, Olivia Palmer and Bella Tiffen-Lowe to constantly harass their amazon-like opponents whilst setting up the elusive Minnie Jackson to raid down the Fylde flank.
Fylde became increasingly frustrated as the first half wore on, allowing Jess Miller and Charlotte Hall opportunities to come close to breaching the home team’s back line.
The Cumbrians kept the scoresheet blank until five minutes before half time when Fylde eventually scored from close range and added two more goals in the last few minutes before the interval.
The second half produced a similar pattern to the first with the home team having the majority of possession and the visitors fighting for every ball.
Ten minutes after the restart Fylde scored again but a long period followed without further addition to the score largely due to the heroics of goalkeeper Anastasia Williams covering for the tiring but no less tenacious Cumbrian outfield players.
Three goals conceded by the visitors in the last seven minutes of the game ,however, made the final score 7 – 0
This was hardly a fair reflection on the undoubted defiance of the Cumbrians who coped well for long periods against talented robust opponents.
The Carlisle /Wigton team’s player of the match was Minnie Jackson and their next game is on 27th November at Kirkby Stephen.
